Daily Kickoff

Up to seven things a day for people building with AI. Fewer when there aren't seven.

  1. Kids outlearn AI—and we still don’t know why

Large language models such as Claude, DeepSeek, and GPT need roughly a hundred thousand times more words than a human child to reach fluency, and researchers still do not know why children manage with so little data. Kids typically start grasping language by their first birthday.

  2. They Dedicated Their Lives to Teaching. Then the Deepfakes Started

Four teachers interviewed by WIRED say students used AI to create and share sexualized deepfake images and videos of them on TikTok and Snapchat. Discipline ranged from in-school suspension to a three-day suspension, the maximum a first-time offense allows under one district policy. A federal law makes publishing such nonconsensual AI-generated depictions a crime.
